The design of Alphie s Alley followed Gery s (1991) concept of an Electronic Performance Support System (EPSS). An EPSS is an interactive program that is intended to both train and support the novice user in the performance of a task (Wild, 2000). Everything needed to complete this task information, software, expert advice, guidance, and learning experiences is integrated and available, ideally leading to improved time to performance (time needed for a novice to perform like a more experience colleague), improved worker productivity, and minimal support and intervention by others (Brown, 1996). Table 6.2 summarizes the central elements and attributes of an EPSS (Gery, 2002). The goal of Alphie s Alley as an EPSS is to promote SFA program fidelity by providing a computer environment where all the steps of the tutoring process can be implemented. Each step in the process is structured, simplified, and supported. Implementing the tutoring process with Alphie s Alley also reduces the paperwork and automates the record keeping previously required from tutors. Table 6.3 summarizes the support features in the different modules of the system. Although some task automation is included in Alphie s Alley as part of the support features, our discussions on artificial intelligence (based on Everson, 1995; Mandl & Lesgold, 1988; Mitchell & Grogono, 1993) concluded that adaptive branching was undesirable given the fact that we do not envisage the computer replacing a human tutor. Because our goal is to use the computer and the SFA tutor skills in concert for the progress of the child, we decided to enhance the computerized diagnostic and assessment activities toward a front-end complexity that will simplify the tutor s record-keeping and memory skills so his or her full attention can be devoted to the child. 135

valve is designed to automatically maintain the cabin altitude to this schedule depending on aircraft altitude without any intervention from the pilot. The differential pressure is maintained high enough so that if the cabin pressurisation fails when the aircraft is at a high altitude there is suf cient time for the pilot to descend. For example, at 50 000 ft; the pressure will not leak away causing the cabin altitude to exceed a safe value before the pilot has had enough time to descend to a safe altitude. Therefore, the cabin must be designed as a pressure vessel with minimum leakage. In the event of loss of pressurisation the cabin pressure control valve will close and the only leakage will be through the structure. Non-return valves are installed in the air distribution pipes where they pass through the cabin wall, so that when the air supply fails the air already in the cabin cannot leak back out through the pipes. A safety valve is installed in the cabin wall to relieve internal pressure if it increases above a certain value in the event of failure of the pressure control valve. The principles of operation are illustrated in Figure 7.23. An example of the Boeing B777 pressurisation system is shown in Figure 7.24, and typical cabin discharge valves shown in Figure 7.25.

Provide layered support resources to accommodate diverse performer motivations, time, and existing knowledge or skill. Automate tasks including deliverable creation (e.g., automatically generated reports, communications, outputs, etc.). Provide alternative view of the interface to allow varying amount of structure and freedom to users who require more or less guidance and task structuring.

An important system that is emerging from future system studies is that of prognostics. For some while it has been practice to log failures as they occur in ight to aid rapid detection and repair on the ground. However, increasing demands to reduce support costs and improve turnaround times have led to a demand for something more sophisticated the ability to predict and plan for failures. The modern aircraft computing architecture contains a wealth of information that characterises the normal and potentially degrading performance of a system and its components. Knowledge of such information as ow rates, pressures, loss rates and actuator positions and states, number of excursion, and elapsed operating time can be compared with input data of known wear characteristics to form the basis of an analysis of degrading performance. The introduction of knowledge-based systems and the application of Bayesian statistics allows models to be constructed that can draw inferences from measured performance. This inferential data can be used to predict the time at which system or component performance becomes unacceptable or to estimate time to failure. This is of importance to operators who can support the aircraft by arranging for maintenance to be performed at preferred maintenance centres before failure occurs. This allow them to plan for parts, tools and staff to be available for a rapid repair. This leads on to a concept of Maintenance Free Operating Periods (MFOPs) as a contractual requirement rather than working to a scheduled maintenance period.
